Preparing Your AC for Hurricane Season
Hurricane season runs from June through November. Hurricane Milton's landfall near Siesta Key in October 2024 was a reminder of what storms can do. A little preparation protects your AC.
Request an AC technicianBefore the season
Book a tune-up, clear debris from around the outdoor unit, and make sure it's securely anchored to its pad. Ask about hurricane straps if it isn't.
Surge protection
Lightning and power surges when the grid comes back can damage AC electronics. A surge protector for the system is worth asking about.
When a storm is coming
Turn the AC off at the thermostat and the breaker before the storm arrives if you expect outages. Secure loose items in the yard that could hit the unit.
Covers
A cover can keep debris out during the storm, but never run the unit with it on. Remove it afterwards.
After the storm
Look for debris, damage and signs of flooding before restoring power. If water reached the unit or air handler, have it inspected first.
Power coming back
Wait a few minutes after power returns before turning the AC back on, to let the grid stabilise.
Generators
If you plan to run the AC on a generator, it must be sized correctly and connected through a transfer switch by an electrician.
Get it checked
Elevating equipment
In flood-prone areas, raising the outdoor unit on a stand or platform keeps it above likely water levels. Some local codes have requirements for elevation in flood zones, so ask the contractor about the rules where you live.
Keep records
Take photos of your outdoor unit, air handler and their model plates before the season starts. If you need to make an insurance claim after a storm, having those details on hand makes the process smoother.
Shutters and airflow
If you close up the house with storm shutters, make sure nothing blocks the outdoor unit's airflow once you start running it again after the storm.
