Cooling most of the year

Sarasota sits on Sarasota Bay on Florida's Gulf Coast, with about 55,000 people in the city and roughly 935,000 across the two-county metro. Its humid subtropical climate means hot, sticky summers when the heat index regularly passes 100°F, and air conditioners that run for most of the year. Systems here work far harder than in most of the country, so they wear faster and need regular care. See AC maintenance.

Humidity, salt and storms

Comfort here is as much about moisture as temperature. An AC that cools but doesn't dry the air leaves rooms clammy and can lead to mould. Homes near the Gulf and the bay also face salt air that corrodes outdoor coils, and hurricane season brings power cuts and flooding risk. Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key as a Category 3 storm in October 2024. Read preparing your AC for hurricane season.
