Nokomis at a glance

Nokomis is a small coastal town of about 3,200 people in Sarasota County, south of Osprey and just north of Venice. It reaches the Gulf through Nokomis Public Beach and Casey Key, a barrier island lined with beachfront houses.

What that means for your AC

Many Nokomis homes are older, single-storey houses and mobile or manufactured homes, often with heat pumps or package units. Package units sit outside and take the full force of sun, rain and salt, so they benefit from regular cleaning and checks; see heat pumps.

Waterfront living

With Dona Bay, Shakett Creek and the Gulf nearby, salt air and storm surge are part of life here. Raising outdoor units on stands where flooding is a risk can protect them.

Horse and Chaise

The first settlers, the Knight family, arrived in 1868 after raising cattle inland during the Civil War. The area was first called Horse and Chaise, a name that also covered modern Venice. A post office named Nokomis opened in 1917, the same year Dr. Fred Albee bought land for the Nokomis subdivision. About 2.5 miles of the Legacy Trail run through town. Seasonal residents often leave homes closed in summer; set the AC so humidity stays under control while you're away.
