AC Not Cooling? A Checklist for Sarasota Homes
When the AC stops cooling in Sarasota, the house can heat up quickly. Work through these checks before a technician arrives; one of them may solve it.
Request an AC technicianThermostat
Make sure it's set to Cool, the set temperature is below room temperature, and the batteries aren't dead. Smart thermostats can lose Wi-Fi or switch modes after a power cut, so check the settings carefully.
Filter
A clogged filter starves the system of air and can freeze the coil. Replace it if it's dirty, and note the size printed on the edge.
Breakers
Check the breakers for the indoor air handler and the outdoor unit. Reset a tripped one once. If it trips again, leave it off and get help, because repeated trips point to an electrical fault.
The disconnect
Look at the disconnect box beside the outdoor unit. Make sure it's switched on or that the pull-out block is fully in place.
Ice on the lines
Frost or ice on the copper lines or indoor coil means turn the system off and let it thaw for a few hours, with the fan on if possible. Then check the filter.
Outdoor unit
With the system on, the outdoor fan should spin. If it hums but doesn't turn, or doesn't run at all, a capacitor or motor may have failed.
Water in the pan
If the AC has stopped and there's water in the drain pan, a float switch may have shut it off. See clogged drain lines.
